Note: Nothing in this standard supercedes applicable laws and regulations.
Note: In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall take
precedence.
1.1 Purpose. The purpose of this test is to determine the refrigerant charge for air conditioning and heat pump
systems with a variety of heat exchangers. A correct refrigerant charge (this test) shall be determined before
testing system performance including heat exchanger core freeze (GMW1 5775), Air Conditioning (A/C)
(GMW3037), and for Electric Vehicles Heating (GMW3040) and Defrosting (GMW3049).
1.2 Applicability. This procedure applies to all passenger vehicles and light commercial trucks with an A/C
system.
1.3 Remarks.
1.3.1 The expansion valves may impact the test result, therefore the expansion valve setting (or control) shall
be determined prior to testing or this procedure must be repeated for confirmation after the final expansion setting
is selected.
1.3.2 Pressure measurements in this standard are Kilopascals Gauge Pressure (kPaG). It is permissible to
collect data using measurement of Kilopascals Absolute (kPaA). Use care to avoid conversion error, and label
clearly in databases and engineering reports if using kPaA units. Temperature differential measurements
(differences between two (2) individual temperature measurement locations) are noted in degrees Kelvin (°K) to
avoid confusion with single temperature measurements noted in degrees Celsius (°C).
1.3.3 Use of a variable fan for the Hot Ambient Cycles for the vehicle condenser confounds the measurement of
peak Before Expansion Device (BXD) temperature and pressure throughout the test. A condenser variable fan
is not to be used in the Hot Ambient cycles of this test. Wind speed is varied to match a variable fan condenser
airflow condition.
