Purpose/Material Description.
This specification covers the properties of a polyester Sheet Molding Compound (SMC), reinforced with randomly oriented glass fibers. The cured material shall have the properties as outlined in 1.2 for Type 1 or Type 2, depending on the density and glass loading.
Symbols.
The material abbreviation according to ISO 11469 is UP-GF35 for Type 1 and UP-GF40.for Type 2. See Section 8 for coding.
Applicability.
Includes upper plenum, speaker close-out panels, diffusers, the surround, and other components that are partially visible to the customer. The molded component shall have an aesthetic, uniform as-molded appearance. Materials to this specification are not weatherable nor color match capable.
Material candidates to this type have historically been black in color, but a natural or gray material that meets the mechanical performance could also be qualified to this specification.
Remarks.
All material candidates will also need to meet the bondability requirements of GMW15921. Former title of GMW16567 was “Polyester Sheet Molding Compound - Ultra-Low Density SMC 35% Glass Fiber Reinforced”.
