Purpose/Material Description.
This specification describes material types of unfilled, heat stabilized, weatherable, injection moldable acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA); acrylonitrile styrene acrylate and polycarbonate (ASA+PC) blends; and acrylonitrile styrene acrylate and poly(methyl methacrylate) (ASA+PMMA) blends.
Types.
There are multiple types within this specification intended for different applications, distinguished by suffix and type number. Properties are described in this section and in Table 1 and Table 2.
ASA.
Multiple types of unblended acrylonitrile styrene acrylate resins may be specified:
• Standard ASA, Type 1, suffix ASA-T1.
• High UV ASA, Type 3, suffix ASA-T3.
ASA+PC.
Multiple types of blended acrylonitrile styrene acrylate and polycarbonate resins may be specified:
• High PC ASA+PC, Type 5, suffix ASA+PC-T5.
• High UV ASA+PC, Type 6, suffix ASA+PC-T6.
ASA+PMMA.
One (1) type of blended acrylonitrile styrene acrylate and Poly(methyl methacrylate) resins may be specified:
• High UV ASA+PMMA, Type 7, suffix ASA+PMMA-T7.
Legacy Types.
Suffixes ASA-T2 (High Heat ASA) and ASA+PC-T4 (Low PC ASA+PC) are legacy types and should not be specified.
Sustainability.
Sustainable materials as defined in GMW3116 may be approved to this specification with suffix - RECYCLED for compounds with recycled content or suffix - BIOBASED for compounds with bio-based content.
Paintability.
Plastics used for painted applications are required to meet Paint Performance Requirements for New Plastic Materials per GMW16172. Additionally, painted plastic parts are required to meet Painted Plastic Parts Performance Requirements per GMW14797.
Symbols.
The material abbreviation according to ISO 11469 are shown in Table 1.
Applicability.
Typical applications include uncoated exterior trim. Consult GM Materials Engineer for high gloss applications. PMMA and ASA blends with more PMMA content by mass than ASA shall be specified under GMW18194.
Remarks.
None.
